Ishbel -- I have been teaching Academic Writing in the EBP since the program started in 1998 and I run the Social Issues Wiki. I grew up in Scotland and came to Canada as a graduate student in the 1970s. I liked the life here so I decided to stay. I have an MA in Applied Linguistics and have taught at McGill and Concordia universities in Montreal, as well as Tokai University in Japan where I lived for 5 years. Now I live in Kitsilano with my cat Chirp and spend my time between Vancouver and Salt Spring Island.
Marti -- My name is Marti and I teach Academic Skills in the English Bridge Program. At the moment I am also Acting Coordinator so please come see me if you have questions or concerns. I have lived in Canada for 8 years and I lived in Asia (China, Japan and Singapore) for 20, so believe me, I know about culture shock! I am interested in using computers for language learning, especially for learning vocabulary. I live with my family in North Vancouver and we have just adopted two cats, Lucy and Leila.

Lawrence -- I was born in the Maritimes, am married with two grown kids -- both married -- and love teaching! I have taught in BC at Kwantlen University College and, of course, here at SFU. I have also had the privilege of teaching at a teacher's training college (now Semarang National University) in Semarang, Indonesia, and at Peking University (Beida) in Beijing, China. My special love in English language teaching is training teachers whose first language is not English but who wish to teach English in their home countries. In my spare time, guess what I like to do (if there's snow)? I also enjoy sports, photography, and music.
Arthur -- I was born and raised in a small town called Vanderhoof which is supposedly the geographical centre of British Columbia. After a journey to Singapore I realized that I wanted to teach English in Asia. I returned to Canada and did my undergraduate degree at UBC in English Language Studies and soon after became certified to teach English as a second language. After what seemed like too many years, I made it back to Asia but this time to Hong Kong. I taught English to college students and completed an MA in Applied Linguistics at HKU before returning to Canada in 2004.
Avril -- I was born in Toronto, Ontario, raised in Montreal, Quebec and as a result, speak both English and French fluently. I am married to a New Zealander, and lived in Auckland for 6 years where I had both my daughter and son. In 1990, our family moved back to Canada, and I did both my undergraduate and graduate degrees here at Simon Fraser University. My majors were in Linguistics, TESL, and French and Spanish. My Graduate degree is in Understanding Second Language Education...I have been with the EBP nearly three years, love my work and enjoy my colleagues and the students who I have the privilege of teaching. The Burnaby campus is one of the most beautiful campuses on the planet. Enjoy the fresh air! It's good for your brain! I hope you have a successful and memorable time in the EBP!

Andreea -- I was born and raised in Romania, a country in Europe located between Russia, Hungary and Bulgary. I am actually Hungarian in terms of my ethnicity, and many people in the town I grew up in and in Romania in general tended to have different ethnicities. I have lived in British Columbia since 1997 and positively adore Vancouver. I studied at SFU cognitive science and linguistics and then went onto working on my Masters degree in Linguistics which I am finishing this summer. I know how hard it is to study and work and live in a different language than your mother tongue, and even to this day I have moments when the words don't come to me. My only advice for anyone wanting to study in English is to work hard and not despair. There is a light at the end of the tunnel (eventually)!

Stephen -- I was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, but have lived in British Columbia since 1989. I pursued music for many years and consider myself very fortunate that the lifestyle of a musician allowed me the opportunity to travel extensively and to come into contact with many different cultures. Currently, I am completing my undergraduate degree in Communication at SFU, and am embarking on my third term as a teaching assistant with the English Bridge Program. At the moment, my hobbies include bicycling, swimming and playing a game called “Settlers of Catan.”

Hi, guys, I am pepe and I am taking EBP during this summer vacation. Curs It’s just ten days I have been in Van and much less days I spent in SFU, everything here strange me and I gain fun in everywhere,, so fresh! However, my English is a bit broken and poor. so that I have to make great effort to study in EBP class which is required by our teachers, ”ENGLISH ONLY!”, sometimes it doesn’t make sence to me…Honestly, I am already exhausted from the heavy school tasks but making friends here is fantastic. In all, EBP is supposed to be a colorful and meaningful holiday.
I am sorry that I had forgot to update my wiki until received Ishbel's mail.Half a month has passed, I began to adapt myself to EBP's tempo gradually but feel bearing much more stress.Classmates in our class are all outstanding and It is so hard for me to step up. Late now ,go sleep.Good night!

In summer semester 07, I majored Accounting Management in a college. Unfortunately, when i handle some problm, feeling not easy to me. Hopefully, I want to via study EBP to strong my ability , which the EBP is a nice coures. In the first week, we got 4 times ice breaker so that we knew each classmate as well. Finally, I hope that all peers can pass the final test then enjoy your university life. 0(n_n)0...

My name is Bon, came from Shanghai. I have been in Canada for almost 1year and this is my first time to come to SFU. Although soccer is not popular here, I enjoy concerts and movies very much. I am very looking forward to the oasis’s concert in GM place this summer, hope that will be a good show. About IRP, well, I have done it before which was a very miserable experience. The topic, a common currency for North America, almost made me mad. Honestly, it’s a tough work but really benefits me a lot. So, I prefer controversial topics because they help me to create comprehensive understanding.
Hey, guys just look at my face in the picture. I am struggling with HWK. Im DYING!!

Danyu - Hi guys! I was born in Heilongjiang Province, China, and graduated high school in Beijing in 2007. I have a warm heart and like to help people if I can. I like to play piano or guzheng-an oriental musical instrument, and sometimes I draw pictures in pencil. I like to walk, but I am not good at sports. So usually what I do depends on my feelings. I dream every night and remember all the dreams. These are different stories. I try to write down every dream, then I can write a novel in the future. ^-^

Vivian—*-*Hi,everybody! My Chinese name is Wei Hu, and it is actually run out of the mill. I came from Xinyang , Henan province. I suppose if I had to describe Xinyang, the first thing I would say that it’s famous for green tea. This is my first time to go aboard for studying. It’s really a big challenge for me, because the study atmosphere here is totally different from what I got used to at my home. But for me challenge means impetus. I wish both us can enjoy and pass the EBP then enter into the universities successfully.

Nicholas -- Hello everyone, I am Nicholas Wang. I came from Shenzhen, China. I came to Canada three years ago and it seems to be quite a long time for some of you becuase I know that some people just arrive in Canada for half a month. You may want to ask what I did in three years time. And well, I just finished my two years college life in ontario and received my diploma in Business Accounting. Before that, I was in a high school and that was in ontario too. I am going to study accounting (or finance, or both) at Simon Fraser but for now, EBP is my challenge, or realistically, a barrier towards my future career, which means I have to overcome it. I think all of you have the same goal of passing the course, so best wishes.

TIM**--I was born and raised in Tianjin, China. Tianjin is just beside Beijing. My English is not very good, because I find to learn a different language better. It is need people to know the culture of that language and you must make yourself to think in English in your mind. It is so hard to me to do like that. The IRP, I think I will choose one topic of the Melting Glaciers. Because I like ice, and I like mountains

Katherine--I was born and raised in Beijing,China. I've never lived in other city before this time. I think Vancouver is a good start for me because till now I've already been here for like 10 days and I can totally handle my daily life,I met many interesting people here many of them have become my good friends.Of course my English is improving everyday after I arrived via the contact with native speakers, especially after I started my class in EBP. I think the biggest problem of my English is my speaking skill.I'm sure that EBP will help me a lot during this semester, at the same time I will definitely try my best to finish my study well!

Hello, everyone here. I’m Aviva. I was born in Shantou, Guangdong Province, China, but I move to Beijing in 1999 and just left on 14th May 2008 to have my new life in Canada.
I will study eco because I like math, biz and eco. And I also learned something about accounting, statistics in English.I always read some books about eco and my favorite book is freakonomics (freak+economics). Now, I’ve just finished The World Is Flat which is very famous book in eco.
Talk about my English, I think that I can read some academic books and catch the pionts quickly so that I can study by myself even in English because I did the same things in the past 2 years. But my real English is too bad in every aspect. EBP is a necessary evil for us, I will try my best to pass it and began my undergraduate study as soon as I can. I wish everyone here (except the teachers here~) Good luck, my friends.

I like here very much, fresh air, nice people, but the climate here is a little bit cold, however comparing with the Toronto,it is much better in Vancouver. Well the main aim that I am here is to prove my English skills, and I would like to pay more attention on my writing, because I am not very good at writing articles. I will have an impressive and cheerful studying period with every students and instructors in EBP.EBP is really an intensive program. I will try my best to study hard in weekdays, but I am still crazy to enjoy my vacation with my friends. I’d like to spend a meaningful term to start the first step of my engineering career. This is my dream of my future, I would never give up. In short, my rule, "solidarity + perseverance = success!"

Ryan (Sungpil) - I'm from Seoul, Korea. I've been in Vancouver since last September. The purpose of coming over here is to study English and to get various experiences. Before coming to Vancouver, I studied civil engineering for 1year at Seoul Nat’l Univ. Afterwards, I had been in the military service for two and half years. In Vancouver, I’ve tried to do everything as much as I can. This program, EBP, is my last challenge for my academic skills. I’m supposed to go back to Korea this coming August, that means I have only about two and half months left. But, I hopefully get along with you guys well for the time and keep in touch with you guys even though I’m back to Korea. Let’s study hard weekdays and hang out weekends! LOL

It seems that I am one of the graduates from university which not so many students as whom graduate from high school. I am so glad to study with u guys in the EBP at SFU, I hope we can have the same classes after EBP, which means we can pass the EBP and have regular classes at SFU. Victor -- Hey, I am Victor Hou, in section three. I was born in China, where most students in EBP come from there. I have studied in a university of China called Beijing University of Posts & Telecommunications. I have been Vancouver almost two months as my family immigrated to Canada. It is amazing here! I like to enjoy the sound of birds and the color of the sky in here. I have admitted by the Science Faculty of SFU, so after I graduate from EBP I could enroll in my major, Management and System Science. I love it. Anyway, let us enjoy the time we spent together.
